When a class assignment calls for students to locate pen-pals, Anita begins corresponding with a soon-to-be-released inmate in a central California prison. Frequently raped by her mother's boyfriend, she harbors deep tendencies for violence and aggression. As their exchanges grow from platonic to passionate, Anita develops newfound confidence and decides to act on that aggression against her attacker, Rooney. Upon release from prison, Howard and Anita meet. She reveals Rooney's murder to him, and the two hide his body. From there the death toll only rises, and the couple is forced to go on the run. But with the authorities in pursuit, can the young lovers avoid meeting their fate?
